    Recipe Questions

My dish didn't turn out the same way yours did in the pictures. What went wrong?

When it comes to cooking and baking, there are SO MANY possible reasons why a dish turns out differently when one person makes it versus another person. Here are some common reasons your dish might not have turned out the way you thought it would:

    • The quality of the ingredients you used. When you use lower quality ingredients, you will get a different result than if you had used high quality ingredients. Always use the best that you can afford, especially when it comes to flour, spices, meats, seafood, and produce.
    • You made substitutions. Any substitution you make is going to alter the dish from its original intent. I will often suggest substitutions for dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, and food allergy circumstances, but even those will still alter the taste and texture of a dish.
    • You think you followed the recipe to a T, but you made substitutions. I can't stress enough how much any substitution or alteration will 100% change the dish you make. I get a lot of emails from people who swear they followed the recipe exactly... except they used oat milk instead of coconut milk, or they left out the peanut butter in a dish that has peanut butter in the name, or they used more or less oil than the recipe calls for. Every little change is still a change to the recipe.
    • You are cooking or baking at a higher altitude. Altitude can drastically affect baking, and cooking to some extent.

    Common Cooking Substitutions

Like you, my family's taste preferences and dietary needs are completely unique. There are some substitutions that you can make, depending on the recipe.

For a full list of substitutions for the recipes on this website, be sure to visit my Common Cooking Substitutions page. And if there are specific substitutions you would like to know about, feel free to send us an email.
